The Nuts and Bolts of Forest C Storage

Virtual Event

September 08, 2022 - 11:30 AM

Nature based solutions to climate change are in the news, and forests are in the spotlight for their ability to store carbon and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. There are multiple carbon registries and forest carbon offset projects and programs, and n ew protocols are being developed. We’ll take a step back and look at the basics of forest carbon: how do forests interact with the carbon cycle, where is carbon stored in the forests, and how do we measure it? Then we will consider the role of the two components of forest carbon storage: carbon stocks and accumulation rates, and examine how management influences carbon storage in forests. Finally, we will discuss how carbon sequestration interacts with other forest management objectives.

Speaker Biography

Coeli Hoover earned her PhD in ecology from the University of Georgia’s Institute of Ecology.  An ecosystem ecologist, Coeli has been investigating forest carbon at the stand and landscape scale since 1999.  She is particularly interested in the carbon consequences of forest management practices, and has used long-term silviculture studies and historic inventory records to assess the effects of management practices on forest carbon stocks and rates.  Coeli also enjoys educating audiences of all types about the role of forests in the carbon cycle, and has conducted outreach at every level from local to international.
