Miller discussed how a private timberland owner managing forests for timber production can also address elements of biodiversity with a focus on older forests. Miller discussed elements of scale, conservation and restoration of older forests, as well as risks, and opportunities of owning and managing older forests.

Speaker Biography

Adrian Miller currently serves as the Senior Director of Environmental Affairs at Weyerhaeuser where he is responsible for managing environmental regulatory risk for the US timberlands business. Prior to joining Weyerhaeuser, Miller served as the Director of Public Affairs for Rayonier where he was responsible for managing legislative and regulatory issues for Rayonier’s six western states. Prior to Pope Resources being acquired by Rayonier, he served in many capacities including Vice President of Corporate Affairs where he was responsible for human relations, information technology, and regulatory and public affairs. Prior to joining Pope Resources, Miller served as the Manager of Policy and Sustainability for Longview Timber and Director of Forest Management for the Washington Forest Protection Association. Miller began his forestry career as a forestry technician at the Pacific Lumber Company in California where he held a number of positions.

Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry from Humboldt State University and a Masters of Science degree in forestry from the University of Missouri. He has held leadership positions for a number of non-profit organizations including the Society of American Foresters, the Washington Forest Protection Association and the National Alliance of Forest Owners. He is currently a board member of the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition and the Agriculture and Forestry Education Foundation.
