Introduction to US Carbon Markets

The webinar will introduce carbon offset credits and markets, with an emphasis on forest carbon offset projects in the United States, followed by the forest management practices that qualify for offset projects. Then, the presentation will highlight the key aspects of forest-based voluntary and compliance carbon markets. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of various current and emerging forest carbon offset markets.

Speaker Biographies

Rajan Parajuli, PhD - Assistant Professor, NC State University College of Natural Resources

Dr. Rajan Parajuli is an assistant professor of forest economics and policy at North Carolina State University. He received his PhD in forest economics and policy, an M.S. in forest economics and management, and another M.S. in finance from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge LA USA. Dr. Parajuli specializes in forest product markets and trade, economic impact and contribution analysis, policy impact assessment, and forest carbon and bioenergy markets. He has over 10-year of research and working experience in southern forestry in the USA. 

Stephanie Chizmar, PhD - Postdoc, NC State University College of Natural Resources

Stephanie Chizmar obtained a B.S. in Environmental Science (Concentration: Conservation Science) and a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington in 2014. She traveled to Peru to research agroforestry systems for her thesis under the direction of Drs. Erin Sills and Fred Cubbage, among others, at North Carolina State University.  She subsequently pursued a Ph.D. in Forestry and Environmental Resources with a focus in Extension and a minor in economics at North Carolina State University under the direction of Drs. Rajan Parajuli and Robert Bardon, among others. She defended her dissertation on financial programs for forest landowners in 2021. As a Research Associate and Postdoctoral Research Scholar she completed research and Extension programming in economic contribution analysis, urban forestry, carbon markets, and forest-based employment. In September 2022, she will start her career with the US Forest Service in Research Triangle Park, NC as a Research Economist/Research Forester.
