Register for The Promise and Practice of Community-Based Forestry

Chris Buss, Director, Forest Conservation Programme, International Union for Conservation of Nature

Speaker Information: Chris has over 20 years of experience in a range of natural resource management and rural livelihood programmes; and holds an MSc in Environmental Forestry from the University of North Wales, UK. He has worked long term in Botswana, Tanzania and Malawi, with short term work in over 25 countries on forest governance, sustainable forest management, rural livelihoods, protected area management, and forest enterprise programmes in the role of programme manager and/or specialist advisor. Working on these programmes has enabled a wealth of experience to be developed in the implementation of community-based natural resource projects at local, national, regional and global levels. He has extensive knowledge of participatory approaches to forestry interventions and forest utilization at global/national/community level and has practical experience in developing national strategic and community level plans for community-based forestry.

Since 2009, Chris has been working for IUCN and is currently Deputy Director of the forest programme responsible for the operational aspects of the programme and technical delivery of the programme and project portfolio with a particular focus on achieving results on the ground. This work is centered on three mutually supporting themes of Forest Landscape Restoration, slowing the rate of deforestation through use of IUCN’s PA categories, and Locally Controlled Forests. While the GFCCP’s programme of work is designed and implemented around these three thematic areas it builds synergies with IUCN’s work on private sector engagement, economics, ecosystem-based adaptation and protected areas. Most of the GFCCP’s activities are delivered jointly with IUCN regional programmes and the IUCN scientific expert commissions. Chris has been involved with TFD on the Investing in Locally Controlled Forestry dialogue stream as one of the leaders in designing the overall process and an integral part of the dialogues advisory group, and is now leading the Land-Use Dialogues stream.
