Risk, Return and Impact: Tradeoffs in Nature Based Solutions Investment Strategies

As the importance of nature-based solutions (NBS) becomes more widely accepted, and governments and corporations seek to fulfill their climate pledges, investors are seeking opportunities in NBS carbon markets.  This presentation will provide an overview of approaches to investing in NBS and discuss tradeoffs related to risk, return and impact.

Tom Hodgman - Vice President, Nature Based Solutions, Goldman Sachs-AIMS Imprint

Tom Hodgman is a vice president in the Alternative Investments & Manager Selection (AIMS) Group, based in Chicago, where he is a member of the Imprint & ESG Investment Team. Tom leads Imprint’s work in nature based solutions investing, including portfolio management of the Restore Fund for Apple and Conservation International. Prior to joining the firm, he worked at The Nature Conservancy as Deputy Managing Director at NatureVest – The Nature Conservancy’s impact investing unit – where he led NatureVest’s investments in sustainable forestry, forest conservation, and carbon offset projects, including the Cumberland Forest Project which was recognized by Environmental Finance as the Impact Fund of the Year in 2020. Before that, Tom worked as a Senior Associate at Equator LLC (now BTG Pactual Timberland) where he performed financial and operational due diligence on private equity timberland investments in Brazil and managed client portfolios. Prior to that, he worked as an Apprentice Forester for Yale University and as an Environmental Scientist for Arcadis BBL. He holds a BA from Wesleyan University in Environmental Science, a Masters in Forestry from the Yale School of Forestry, and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
